Open every day except 25 December, 26 December and 1 January

March - October: 9am - 6pm (last tour 5pm / last entry 5pm)

November - February: 9am - 5pm (last tour 4pm / last entry 4pm)

What to see and do

Allow at least 3-4 hours to take in everything there is to see at this amazing site.

An ideal visit

11am: Morning coffee in our cafe Caffi'r Castell

11.30am -1pm: Start with the film presentation, then collect your audio guide, take in the views of the city from the roof-top terrace, walk the battlements to the Norman Keep.  Explore a selection of the lavishly decorated rooms in the Castle Apartments at your own pace.

1pm - 1.30pm: Lunch in Caffi'r Castell

1.40pm: Take a guided tour of the Castle Apartments. (Premium Tour Ticket) The guided tour of the lavish Victorian Castle apartments, led by the highly knowledgeable castle guides, continues to be at the core of any visit to Cardiff Castle and lasts approx 45 minutes.

2:30pm: Finish tour, allow time to browse in the gift shop, relax in Castle grounds.

Premium Tour Ticket

Your visit includes:

all elements of the regular admission plus a 45-minute guided tour of additional Castle apartments with an expert guide.

You can upgrade to a Premium Tour Ticket at any time, please ask at the Ticket Office.

NB: There may be an additional charge for special events.

Important information for Cardiff Castle Pass Holders

Due to special events taking place in Cardiff Castle grounds, please note that your Cardiff Castle Pass will not be valid on the following dates:

  • Saturday and Sunday 19 - 20 June: Joust!  
  • Saturday 26 June: Armed Forces Day before 12noon  
  • Sunday 27 June: Polo in the Castle  
  • Saturday and Sunday 25 - 26 September: Great British Cheese Festival

Special discount for Pass Holders will be available for the Great British Cheese Festival on the day.

North Gate 

Due to special events taking place in the Cardiff Castle grounds, please note that the North Gate entrance will be closed on the following days:

  • Saturday - Sunday 15-16 May: The Romans Return  
  • Friday 18 - Sunday 20 June: Joust!  
  • Saturday 26 June: Armed Forces Day   
  • Sunday 27 June: Polo in the Castle
  • Thursday 1 July: The Tempest
  • Sunday 8 August: Picnic in the Castle        
  • Friday - Sunday 24 - 26 September: Great British Cheese Festival
