We welcome over 10,000 schoolchildren a year to the Castle and hope to make every visit special. To help you plan your visit, click here to download a MAP of the Castle grounds.

Length of Visit

We recommend that you allow as much time as possible on site to get the most from your visit; however some schools prefer to spend part of the day here.

As a guide, the following options would take a total of 4 hours (including time to enjoy a lunch break and a visit to the Castle Gift Shop):

  • The guided tour of the Castle interiors; 45-60 minutes per group
  • Use of the Education Centre; 75 minutes for a single session
  • Use of the Interpretation Centre (not including Firing Line), audio tour of the grounds, Falconry, Battlements and Wartime Shelters - approx 60-90 minutes.

Coat and Bag Storage

Groups can leave bags and coats in a small building near the entrance to the Castle but unfortunately bags cannot be left in the Education Centre during busy times.

Wet Weather

Part of your visit will be spent outdoors therefore please advise your group to bring appropriate clothing.

Packed lunches

Groups using the Education Centre may eat packed lunches there as a part of a booked session. We do not have a dedicated room for schools to eat lunches in bad weather, but if possible we will always try to accommodate your group somewhere within the basement area of the Castle.

We may have to split larger groups in order to try to accommodate them for lunch inside during wet weather and it may therefore not be possible for a whole year group to eat together at the same time. You will be advised of your lunch time upon booking and space upon arrival. If you wish to be allocated a space for lunch, it is vital that you adhere to the times given to you as other groups are likely to be using the space before and after you.

Risk Assessment

To assist with your risk assessments download our Cardiff Castle Safety Information for schools and educational visits here.

Gift Shop

We have a gift shop, offering quality gifts at a range of affordable prices and schools are welcome to use the shop. We do ask, however, that groups be split into manageable numbers (10 at a time seems ideal) to go into the shop.

There is also the option of pre-ordering items from the shop, which can be ready for you to collect. These can contain gifts up to whatever amount you may choose for your pupils.

Please telephone the Gift Shop on 029 2087 3531 for more information on this service.
