We welcome over 20,000 schoolchildren a year to the Castle and hope to make every visit special. To help you plan your visit, click here to download a MAP of the Castle grounds.
We recommend that you allow as much time as possible on site to get the most from your visit; however some schools prefer to spend part of the day here.
As a guide, the following options would take a total of 4 hours (including time to enjoy a lunch break and a visit to the Castle Gift Shop):
Groups can leave bags and coats in a small building near the entrance to the Castle but unfortunately bags cannot be left in the Education Centre during busy times. When storing bags in the lunch areas, please do not leave them on the chairs or tables as other groups may be using the area before you.
Part of your visit will be spent outdoors therefore please advise your group to bring appropriate clothing.
We do not have a dedicated room for schools to eat lunch, however several indoor areas are used for groups using the Education Centre to have lunches as part of a booked session. Groups are allocated 30 minute lunch slots upon booking and the time of your lunch will be noted on your Booking Confirmation. You will be advised of the location upon arrival as this will depend on room availability on the day of your visit.
Please be aware that some areas do not have tables and that we may have to split larger groups.
It is vital that you arrive and leave promptly as other groups are likely to be using the area before and after you.
If you have visited us before, please do not assume that you will be having lunch in the same room as previously.
To assist with your risk assessments download our Cardiff Castle Safety Information for schools and educational visits here.
We have a gift shop, offering quality gifts at a range of affordable prices and schools are welcome to use the shop. We do ask, however, that groups be split into manageable numbers (10 at a time seems ideal) to go into the shop.
There is also the option of pre-ordering items from the shop, which can be ready for you to collect. These can contain gifts up to whatever amount you may choose for your pupils.
Please telephone the Gift Shop on 029 2087 3532 for more information on this service.
