THE CASTLE

Cardiff Castle, as we see it today, is the unique blend of a medieval stronghold, raised within the footprint of a Roman fort, later rebuilt and reimagined through the fortunes of Victorian and Edwardian industrialist aristocracy. Used as an air-raid shelter during the Second World War, a home for the Welsh College of Music and Drama, and more recent development as a modern tourist attraction, the Castle's story spans almost 2,000 years and continues to grow today.

THE HOUSE

The core of the Castle's house is medieval, begun by Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick in the 15th-century. However, most of the prominent architecture and interiors seen today are the spectacular results of William Burges' genius, funded by the vast wealth of the 3rd Marquess of Bute. Their collaboration realised a fantastic, Victorian neo-Gothic image of a medieval castle with breath taking style. Every room is filled with thematic decorations representing the Marquess' interests, education, and faith, all executed in a riot of colour, elaborate detail and incredible workmanship.
