The Historic Heart of a City
Cardiff Castle is not just a historic site — it is a living part of the city.
Owned by the city and open to the public, the Castle plays an active role in Cardiff’s cultural and social life. The grounds host major events and concerts, while its historic spaces support learning, exploration and relaxation.
A Space for Everyone
Cardiff Castle has become one of Wales’ major tourist hotspots, attracting thousands of visitors each year from both the UK and countries all around the world.
Whether they come to explore the ancient walls, climb the Norman Keep, relax in green open spaces or attend seasonal events. Families, history lovers and casual visitors all find something to enjoy. By combining heritage with everyday city life, Cardiff Castle remains one of the most accessible and engaging historic attractions in Wales.
Not Just Cardiff Castle but Cardiff’s Castle
During the COVID-19 pandemic the Castle’s grounds were opened to all as a Public Square, providing a safe and welcoming place to meet and relax. Since then, the castle continues to play an active role in Cardiff’s cultural life, with a regular programme of events and concerts throughout the year.
As Cardiff Castle was given as a gift to the city and people in 1947, local residents and employees are eligible to apply for a Castle Key, giving almost unlimited free entry for a minimum of three years.
