3rd Marchioness of Bute

Lady Gwendolen Mary Anne Stuart (Fitzalan-Howard)

Born: 21 February 1854
Died: 15 January 1932 (Aged 77)

Lady Gwendolen was the daughter of Edward George Fitzalan-Howard, 1st Baron of Glossop, and a grand-daughter to the 13th Duke of Norfolk.

She married John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, on 16 April 1872. Following their wedding in London, the happy couple spent their honeymoon in Cardiff.

The pair were extremely happy together and, despite confessing to not matching her intellectual husband “in the brains department”, Gwendolen was very much involved in the Marquess’ architectural projects, including the extensive rebuilding work here at Cardiff Castle.

Together, they had four children:

Lady Margaret Crichton-Stuart (24 Dec 1875)
John, 4th Marquess of Bute (20 Jun 1881)
Lord Ninian Edward Crichton-Stuart (15 May 1883)
Lord Colum Edmund Crichton-Stuart (3 Apr 1886)
