18. The Handover

During the Second World War, Cardiff’s ancient fortified castle was once again used as a place of refuge. The mural tunnels cleverly became the town’s Air Raid shelters!

But on September 10th, 1947, a new phase of the Castle’s history began.

On this day, the 5th Marquess of Bute formally presented the Castle as a gift to the Lord Mayor and citizens of Cardiff.

Many local people may also remember the Castle between 1949 and 1974 – when the buildings were used by the Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Among those who studied here were the great Welsh actor, Sir Anthony Hopkins, and singer, Iris Williams. More recent ex-students include comedians Rob Brydon and Ruth Jones.

Today, the Castle – which is available to hire for both corporate and private events – is used for a wide range of functions. It has hosted concerts by great international performers, such as Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey.

There are also regular royal visits and other state events. In 1998, a dinner hosted by the Queen and Tony Blair was held here for the European Heads of State. And, the following day, the South African President, Nelson Mandela, received the Freedom of the City of Cardiff right here in the Castle grounds.
