While Cardiff Castle’s walls and towers reflect its medieval past, its interiors tell a very different story.

During the 19th century, the castle was transformed into a lavish Victorian residence by the Bute family and architect William Burges. The result is one of the finest examples of Victorian Gothic interiors in Britain.

A Fantastical Victorian World

Inside the castle, richly decorated rooms are filled with colour, gold leaf, carvings and hand-painted murals. Inspiration comes from mythology, religion, nature and medieval symbolism, creating spaces designed to impress and inspire.

Highlights include the world-famous Arab Room, with its gilded ceiling and intricate detail, and the Banqueting Hall, built to showcase power, wealth and artistic vision.
